Schonbrunn Palace, built between 1696 and 1713 during the reigns of Emperor Charles VI and Maria Theresa, was supposed to have been the Versailles of the Austrian Empire. Hidden away in the French-style gardens, which are themselves bigger than the principality of Monaco, are some fake Roman ruins, the exuberant Neptune Fountain (a ensemble from Greek mythology) and the triumphant Gloriette Monument. |
