The Adriatic Sea is an arm of the Mediterranean Sea separating Italy from the Balkan peninsula. The eastern coast runs along the countries of Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Albania. There are over a thousand islands in the Adriatic, 66 of which are inhabited.
